Verso Biosense - Product photography, Porthcawl studio.

Verso Biosense are doing something genuinely important. Their IRIS platform is a smart intra-uterine sensor system designed to monitor biomarkers and build a better understanding of uterine health. It’s the kind of technology that could make a real difference to women’s lives.

Shooting the product.

Verso Biosense shipped the products to my studio in Porthcawl. The brief was to capture exactly what a patient receives in the post alongside detailed product shots, some with reference to scale. When someone is about to use a medical device, that unboxing moment matters. The photography had to be honest and reassuring in equal measure.

Rather than sticking to a single neutral background, I worked across a range of colours drawn from the Verso Biosense brand palette. That gives the client a set of images with real versatility. Some have the crispness of grey/white, others have more character and warmth that sit well on social, in presentations, or across their website. It also means the photography feels like it belongs to the brand rather than being generic product shots that could have been taken anywhere.

Bringing in a hand model.

I also worked with a hand model for part of the shoot. It’s a simple decision that changes everything. The moment a human hand enters the frame, the product stops being an object and becomes something real. Something held, used, considered. For a medical device designed to improve women’s health, that connection matters. It gives the images warmth without losing precision, and helps communicate scale and intention in a way that pack shots alone never quite manage. I also used an apple for scale in some shots.

Getting the lighting right.

Coloured backgrounds change how you light a product. You’re managing the relationship between the background tone and the object in front of it, making sure nothing bleeds or flattens in a way that loses detail. Add a hand model and the lighting has to work harder still. Skin tones and product finishes need to sit together naturally.

Why it matters.

Companies like Verso Biosense are talking to medical professionals, researchers and investors. The standard of your visual material reflects the standard of your work. Good product photography isn’t decoration. It’s part of how you build credibility.

Working in Porthcawl.

The studio works well for this kind of product shoot. Controlled light, space to set up properly, and just 25 minutes from Cardiff.

If you have a product that needs photographing with care and precision, I’d be glad to talk it through.
