Cardiff and Ogmore Castle

MABLI is a family-run knitwear brand based in Cardiff, known for its beautifully made natural knitwear for both children and adults. Their designs take inspiration from traditional Welsh tapestry blanket patterns, using Italian-spun yarns such as extra-fine Merino wool, linen and organic Pima cotton.

I’ve photographed their collections for both the AW20 and SS21 lookbooks, capturing the texture and tone of their garments in natural and controlled light. Shoots took place on location at Ogmore Castle near Southerndown and indoors at The Sustainable Studio in Cardiff, using Profoto portable lighting to shape the atmosphere.

At Ogmore, I used large 4m scrim banners to soften the summer sun and create even, flattering light across the knitwear. The old stone walls and open Welsh landscape gave the collection a timeless, grounded backdrop. Each frame balanced the quiet heritage of the location with MABLI’s contemporary approach to design.

In contrast, the studio sessions at The Sustainable Studio allowed us to control every detail, from light falloff to colour tone. It was about showing the craftsmanship in each piece: the weave of the yarns, the precision of the patterns, and the care that goes into every garment. This balance between location and studio is what makes fashion photography so rewarding. It is about finding the right space for each story.

My approach to brand photography is always about honesty and texture. I am drawn to natural light, minimal retouching, and tones that feel true to the material. MABLI’s knitwear photographs beautifully when treated with restraint, using soft light, muted colour, and enough air in the frame to let the fabric breathe.
